House Hunting: How Important is Curb Appeal?

In California, many people live behind walls with gates. It’s not uncommon to cruise down the street and pass by gate after gate and wonder what little million dollar gem lies behind the wall. Here is a snapshot from the curbside of my current neighborhood walking path.

I don’t mind the though of living behind a gate. In fact privacy is on the list of must-haves for our house hunt. But, at the expense of curb appeal, well I’m just not sure where to place it. Okay, so now that I’m thinking about it, maybe curb appeal isn’t the right word. Maybe it’s the portrait face of the home.

The dude and I went to visit this home in the Palisades a few weeks ago. Before we ever arrived, we discussed our distaste for it’s brick wall and iron gate, but we thought, no problem – we can always replace an ugly wall with a pretty fence.

But, take a look at what lie behind that gate on Alcima blvd. It’s a hole, and no clear face of a house.

There is a set of steps that lead down to an entryway featuring a decent foyer. Once you are inside, you feel like you are in a relatively normal home, albeit a bit weird. You might not even think twice about having to turn right around and go right back up the steps to get to your bedroom to put your things down.

But it was weird. Totally weird. There is no profile for the front of this home.

Which led me to realize, that while I don’t necessarily need a curbside portrait the likes of a cape cod
