A lot of times when I venture in to older homes, mostly those built between the 1920s to the 1950s I see these akward dormers in the bedrooms that could potentially be a waste of space. A lot of times they will have tiny closets fitted on either side of the window. Closets that are not really functional.
I recently viewed a house for sale in Southern Pines, NC with small bedrooms upstairs where one would want to maximize every bit of space. I thought of this idea I saw in Better Homes & Garden. The home owner cleverly fashioned a work area out their dormer. This space could also be used a vanity area. Looks like a pretty simple setup, something that could be for the most part purchased at a Home Depot or Lowes. If you’re not handy you might need a carpenter to build the bench seat which could also be opened and used for additional storage or you could always use a chair.

Sarah, I live in a house built in 1946 and the upstairs has 3 of these dormers. The result is three closets that are barely functional and it is maddening. I really like the idea of a vanity though… hadn’t thought of that, and it just might work. thanks.
