The Frazada & Peruvian Woven Goods

We would be remiss not to share with you the latest in home decor that we are trying to hunt down for our own homes (and yours too if you are a TEOT ETSY fan.)

Since a trip to the Chinchero Market in Peru, South America is not in my most immediate future, I’d like to bring a bit of the Andes to me. Sarah and I are both nuts over Bolivian Frazadas.

Here’s a little looksee to get you on board with what we’re talking about.

The pillows, blankets and rugs are popping up on boutique shops across the internets, from Australia to the UK, to the US. These lovely styled images come to us via Garza Marfa, the supplier behind the collections avaliable at Heath Ceramics, L’aviva Home, etc

El Hummingbird is an Australian company started by a lovely couple who travel to Peru annually to connect with artisans and select one of kind woven goods to sell on their site.

More and more, we see brands like Urban Outfitters and these days even Target, quick to jump on trends. UO is on the ball here with their one of a kind offering of Peruvian Frazadas. The downside to volume sales for one of a kind, means you likely are dipping your hand into a pattern unknown, but really, who doesn’t love them all?

The 24 Hour Bazaar by Our Open Road is the source where UO is pulling from. This company is run by a family of four that are slow traveling throughout South America and have been for some time now. They initially ran a few fundraisers and a Kickstarter to get themselves funded for the time pursuing their art on the road. They’ve since added their second child to their repertoire, as well as these 24 hour sales full of Andean woven goods. Get on the email newsletter if you want a heads up for the next sale.

The colors are a show stopper in this minimalist application.

The frazada’s cute little sister is the serape. It’s far easier to get your hands on, but can bring some of that similar energy into your home, with vibrant pinks and stripes of a quality that will have you pleased as punch. Be careful with the serape though, as it can leans a bit kitschy.

I can get my hands on a similar style on the cheap through this lucky stumble in the Los Angeles fashion district. This is not the quality wool version of the frazadas, handwoven from the alpacas of the Andes though. I’m thinking more along the lines of a machine made acrylic here, made to mimic the handmade designs of the Andean Mountain people.
But what fun colors,  perfect for punching up an outdoor party space.
