I got myself down to IKEA Carson to check out the JASSA Collection. Here are my thoughts.
I told Sarah on the phone, either my fav bloggers were really hyped, or the IKEA PR department did an amazing job and pinning down all the bohoey blogs for a mention of this collection.
Here’s what the collections looked like on all those blogs, as styled by IKEA. Get ready for some very literal Moroccan interior design with tons of pattern mashups.
This chair is cute, but not quite dining chair height. It would look great in a corner, or maybe under your covered patio in a group. The seat is wide which is nice, but its the sculptural fan back that makes it one of the more striking pieces of the collection.
This chaise is the foremost piece that I wanted for my own home. I had this vision of using one in the the living room to break up my long narrow space but it was a bit disappointing. The scale is tiny. It read like a child’s chair. I thought it would make a fun piece for our living area which is constantly morphing between a family cuddle puddle and a wide open doggie play zone – but it just got swallowed up by the room and looked awkward. Also, I’m accidentally amassing an assortment of rattans and I don’t need to get carried away in that room. It’s out on the patio now thinking about where it wants to live.
I didn’t get to see these in person, but they are interesting. They may feel like kid’s chairs too, but they are a cool casual look in bamboo and could be really great to have around outside.
Along with the Jassa collection of furniture, there is a whole slew of baskets and fabrics and pillow covers that I didn’t include. But, I had to share this pic because Sarah and I have both been into some blue and white splatter paint & brushstrokey pottery vibes for sometime. Its always fun to see a trend interpreted for a big box store. This is a very accessible option if you like the look but haven’t wanted to spring for the more artisanal pieces.
I picked up a couple of these too, in the more horizontal design. I had them in mind as an simple solution to hang on either side of our bed, but man – when I got this stuff home its like my pimp balloon had deflated. Do you know what I mean? High expectations on this stuff, but really it’s better in concept than it is execution.
Again, I remind myself that they were like $30 bucks, and I am cheap.
Of all the pieces, this settee is actually the clear winner. It wins in both scale and overall practicality. If I get my act together for another long trip South, I’ll take the chaise back and swap for a second settee. I’ll admit that it’s not the sturdiest of the pieces that I have ever brought home, but for $129 I don’t know what more I could expect. We’ll see how long she holds us, especially since I’ve already set this pretty lady out on my back patio in the mild SoCal elements.
The series is limited, so chances are if you are wicked into any one piece over another, it might be a beast to find. Personally I checked in on the site for a few weeks before it finally arrived in Carson. It’s in San Diego & Costa Mesa too, but not Burbank. But IKEA also shares inventory count and where there were 48 chaise lounges last Monday, and by the time I arrived last Thursday, there were only 12 left.
