Sarah’s Holiday Essentials

Well we are just two days away and I still have a hand full of gifts to buy, ouch! I slacked. But there’s still time and I’m a clutch gift buyer, granted it won’t be the photo book that makes you sob or the monogrammed cocktail shaker (sorry Mom) or the perfect handmade gift but they’ll still like it and I’ll still enjoy giving it.

Here’s a list of essentials that I need to gather up and have on hand on the Eve of Christmas. Got your needs covered?

Christmas Essentials

1 Wham/ 2 Elf/ 3 cozy throw/ 4 poker deck/ 5 swiss dot PJs/ 6 Christmas Vacation DVD/ 7 Grown-up games/ 8 Thymes Frasier Fir candle/ 9 Hot cocoa/ 10 Cranberry Ginger Fizz

4- Perfume I want to get to know Jo Malone fragrances and I want to smell like pomegranate
5- Pencil skirt I need to try a pencil skirt, all of the ladies on House of Cards with the exception of Robin Wright were wearing them.

Betsy’s Wishlist 2013

Betsy Wishlist
Freaking Dress I need a party for this. Too bad my only parties this season are gonna be for the Oncology Ward
Santa Barbara Vino Train I love a quick adventure on rails, adding wine to the destination is that much sweeter. I’ll take the Dome Car please.
SkillShare Gift Certificate There are so many courses available. I’d like to jump in on a few, to learn things from styling my bookshelves to the art of mastering my Sony Nex3.
Fat Knit Infinity Scarf This is always a readily accepted gift in my world, the softer the better….
Cool iPhone Case from Mara Hoffman
Pretty much anything from this store, but particularly the Toto T. Jeff and I love this band, and I know that Sarah would too, since she listens to 70s soft rock playing through her phone all day long in the office and she kills it at the 1990s Songburst game….remember that one?
California Necklace (to go with my North Carolina charm in quartz)
I love me some state pride and my NC charm is my favorite, but now that I’ve officially adopted California as home, I’ll take the charm to rep it too!
Falconiere Hanging Garden Necklace It’s time to be a big girl and really grow a decent jewelry collection. I’ve never really been that into accessorizing, and when I have it’s been with cheapo costumey pieces from Target. I’ll start with this one please. It looks like an indestructible piece to begin with.
9 West Elm Agate Box The emerald green bug finally bit me with this simple piece. I’d like to see it on top of my clean well organized fantasy nightstand. I bet it would pair really interestingly with the deep sea green blue nightstand.
10 Kelly Wearstler 9 Sunglasses I mean, not that I really feel okay about losing a pair of $550 sunglasses, as that is what I’m destined to do…. but they are badass. Okay, fine some RayBan stocking stuffers will do instead, just the classic aviators in gold and with a dark lens please.

Pass it Down

I decided that I would like to give my oldest daughter DC my dollhouse that my grandfather Craig built for me when I was a kid.

A dollhouse was actually on DC’s list in addition to the hideous hunk of fuchsia plastic the Dream Castle. But I can’t complain because I wanted a Barbie dream house so badly as a child, Kristin you know what I’m talking about here.

After sitting in the my parent’s garage for almost 20 years, whaaatttt! It actually emerged from the depths in great shape. I guess I’d call it a Southern Colonial.

my dollhouse

The tan and brown aren’t exactly happening and it I thought it would be a pretty quick and easy task to give it a paint job. After some consideration I decided that I would paint it the original exterior color scheme for the Indiana project.

Now finding a dollhouse family that is the right size and not creepy looking was a whole other challenge. I opted for this one but I think they will be a little on the big side but I don’t think DC will mind.

Great Books for the Wishlist

Great art and coffee table books have always been a part of my wishlist. I wanted to share a few with you that are sure to be on mine this holiday season. All found on Amazon but don’t forget about Overstock–they have a great selection too.

Happy Holidays from The Estate of Things

Dear Lovely Readers,

Here we are friends, another year is nearly gone.

I hope that as you are reading this Betsy is reuniting with her family for the holidays and I am snuggled in front of a fire eating massive amounts of my Grandma Morris’ sugar cookies (her cookies are unrivaled) and watching Christmas Vacation on the tube.

Betsy and I began writing TEOT more than two years ago.  We’re glad that we could drag you all along with us, as Betsy moves back and forth from NC to LA and I move from house to house (sometimes right next door).

I have design dreams and Betsy has music dreams–maybe one day they’ll come true. Either way you’ll want to be there-just to see what happens.  Until then we’ll keep the fire burning.

Happy Holidays xoxo

Light Show: Detroit Garden Works

Deborah Silver, owner of Detroit Garden Works, garden retailer and landscape extroidinaire is about to fire up the holiday light show on her blog Dirt Simple and I will be sure to watch and be inspired.

The steel rings wrapped with lights have already got my wheels turning–Couldn’t I make my own wire frame sphere and then wrap it with lights? Wonder if I could find my own steel rings at a local hardware store?

Holiday Gift Ideas

I’m gathering ideas for gifts for my family and friends, December 25th always seems to sneak up on me…I vow to stop the trend.

For my Husband,

Books-I always select some for Dan. He says I have a knack for it and I usually make great picks. I have already made my picks for this year and I can’t reveal them because he’ll read it (which is nice that he reads the blog, thanks sweets).  Here are some he’s received in previous years,

Getting Ready

Over the weekend I put up some outside holiday decorations.  I bought a 20′ roll of pine garland from Lowe’s and decided to beef it up a bit with some of the frasier fir trimmings from our Christmas tree.

making garland

I already had some green wire that I bought at a craft store a few years ago. And so I just wired small portions of the frasier fir along the pine garland.

Added some lights and hung it up around the frame of the front door and voila.

Christmas wreath 2010

My Mother and I make fresh wreaths every year but this year I was busy at work and Mom made it for me. They are truly beautiful. We begin with a fraiser fir wreath from West End Wreaths. We usually collect what we can from my Mom’s garden. This year, Mom added cryptomeria, leyland cypress, juniper, small pine cones and canella berries.  She ordered the juniper, small cones and canella berries from Hammelman’s last year.  They lasted a whole year in storage! The only thing that we usually wire on are the pine cones, the rest is just sort of woven in. Our wreath is about $20-$30, you can buy a similar wreath at White Flower Farm but it costs $87.00.

CB2 carries these strands of glass “bubbles” and they classify them as table top decor. I was wondering if anyone had attempted to use them as holiday tree garland?

I think the lights might reflect off of the glass and create a pretty great effect.

And while we are talking about decorating the tree…

I’m also considering these sweet little gold + white ornaments that are part of Jonathan Adler’s Happy Chic line.

Christmas “Wist”

Whether you like or not the holiday season is approaching. Usually sometime after Halloween I began to accept it and get my mind in gear.

In case you haven’t noticed a lot of bloggers have “Wist” Lists scrolling or stationary on the sidebars of their blogs, TEOT included.

TEOT Wistlist

I use the Wist List far more than Betsy does and I didn’t think she would mind so I made TEOT’s Wist List in to my own personal Christmas list. Ha!

So Dan, Mom, Grandma, whoever the lucky party is that draws my name, admirers, friends my gift wishes are moving along on the right of your screen. If some of you are just curious about what I’m wishing for have a look. To get a closer view at some of the items simply click on the image and follow the link to site.

The Final Approach

the estate of things chooses west end wreaths

Fasier firs prepared for delivery in 2008 at West End Wreaths in Ashe County, NC.

West End is one of the many places in the NC mountains where you can venture on to the lot to “choose-n-cut”, its the preferred place for our family.

Christmas is getting close, are you ready? Are you tired of people asking you if you’re ready in order to make small talk?
