Love for Color

COLOR WATCH: Pool Blue

You know we love us some blue around here, but lately POOL BLUE has been capturing our hearts in an unexpected way.

Now this isn’t your average baby boy blue, or Carolina blue. It’s not a rich royal primary blue but it doesn’t lean green or purple.  We are talking about a soft hue with a hint of age, maybe a dusty grey got mixed in, or even a touch of brown, something to give it a bit more complexity… more than a pastel hue, but a blue that has been around and holds more in its knowing layers than the soft candy hue that might come to mind when one thinks of the average light blue.

Have a look at some of the inspirations below that we have been pinning and hopefully you will see what we mean.

Green Envy

Peter Dunham’s feature in Elle Decor is what opened my eyes to the recent influx of green accents that have been floating across my radar.

J. Crew labeled their green offering in the spring line “pesto” and next to blue, green is my favorite so I ordered a new “baby suit” in pesto green.

My mind also wanders to Sarah Sherman Samuel’s green upholstered bed,

It seems though that the green accent is often the sofa,

Don’t Resist White Rooms

Please don’t fight it. White rooms are ok, really I promise. You’re apprehensive because you think it will be boring or sterile. We can’t design/decorate the room with paint only just because we paint it a great shade of blue/gray doesn’t mean that our work is done in that room. There are layers and layers that can go in that white room and on those walls. It’s clean and bright and we can build on that.

I’ve recommended at least one white paint color to three different homeowners and two resisted and the third client is trying to resist in their bath remodel that has a modern farmhouse lean!

These rooms all have white walls, don’t you love them?

Let’s begin with the epic love affair we have with white kitchens,

We love white bathrooms almost as much as white kitchens. And you know what we really crave, fresh white ship lap on the walls whether we live in SoCal or Charleston.

Now don’t be afraid but…everything is white in here except for the floor,

You see the need for white walls here? Because color is bonkers everywhere else. A neutral foundation provides for a situation where you can totally flake out on the throw pillows you just bought every week, every month whatevs

Decorating with Yellow

All you need is a dollop, a splash, a pop—of yellow.

I don’t have any personal desire to paint an entire room yellow or a house but yellow is a fantastic accent and it makes me happy to see the perfect execution of a yellow accent in a room. Case in point,

yellow armchair

It certainly went well with yellow on the Indiana project,

My favorite yellow accent is a stool. In a quiet, white kitchen–yellow barstools scream at you. But it’s a joyful, playful scream.

I’m on the fence as to whether or not I’d like to do a yellow wishbone stool in our home office makeover but I know I want a yellow accent and while I’m deciding enjoy the yellow roundup,

A Sunny SoCal Color Combo from West Haddon Hall

Design by West Haddon Hall

Sarah, thanks for pinning this West Haddon Hall room from a recent Domaine Home feature.

It got me thinking about color schemes in a predominately neutral room.

If you are like me, then you love color and the thought of a mostly neutral room seems kinda crazy, like a lost opportunity. I understand that many people have problems that are the complete opposite of this (I co-blog with one and I also live with one.)

I’m the type of decorator that needs to harness the power of editing. Which are you?

This room popped into my feed though and I am drawn to it in a way that made me curious. Made me want to break it all down and pull out the scheme. There is such balance. I love the look. Those little pops of blue and orange, pulled from the Suzani draped over the back of the couch, give the room life, right?
