Making a New House Feel Like Home

Hey!

Well Sarah and I hung around last week talking about how to make a new house feel like a home–because that’s the kind of thing we do when we get together. (And also because Casper, the mattress started up a conversation and invited us to join in).

I thought of our first days in this house that we live in now. It was an exciting time. Seeing the previous owner’s items moved out, visualizing the minor renovation projects we had ahead of us, and camping out on, I kid you not, our own new Casper mattress that we had delivered before we moved anything else over. I sat and problem solved for weeks before we moved in, I stared at paint samples and I thought about what life would feel like in our new space!

Those are the fantasies that fuel home lovers like us.

And Sarah, as you loyal readers well know, has moved her family something like 5 times in the past 10 years. They love them a good blank slate. So she’s a PROFESSIONAL when it comes to getting inside a new house and looking around thinking about it becoming home.

So, after some real though we came up with an earnest list of our top 3 essentials for a new move-in, and here is what we came up with.

ESSENTIALS FOR MAKING YOUR NEW HOUSE FEEL LIKE HOME

  1. A solid timeless sofa.
We believe in investing in an heirloom quality sofa with timeless lines, a piece that can travel with you from home to home, and grow with your family. Update it with new upholstery when you need to change your look. It’s nice to have comforting arms to catch you when you fall down with exhaustion between unpacking boxes.
  2. Personal Mementos.
A new home can feel foreign at first. Make sure to start out early by setting up a piece that means a lot to you. This could be hanging a piece of art that you and your spouse have collected along the way, or unpacking your grandmother’s hand-me-down china set and stocking the cabinet first. Whatever your go-to sentimental pieces are, pull them out early and find a spot in your new house, so that you can feel at home.
  3. SUPER NICE linens.
It’s important to get that nice fresh comfy feeling in the bed after your long first day in your new home. We are big fans of the linen splurge. You spend a good chunk of your life in your bed, and the kind of rest you get there has a profound affect on your lifestlye, so do it up right. We love an long thread Egyptian cotton sheet, but whatever your preference is, make sure that your best linens are packed on top of the stack so you can make your bed nice and comfy for your first night in your new space.
